Gratitude 14

This post is more from Julian than from me, although I'm grateful too. Today we are grateful to Mixtape Magazine! Julian has been asking, for some time now, to do some sewing and I was always quick to put him off. It's not that I didn't think he should learn, but I just didn't think it was important for him to learn. I think somewhere in my subconscience I fell for that stereotype that only girls sew. Which is really not me!!! Honest :)

Anyway, I got my Mixtape Zine the other day and it had an article about a guy who loved to sew and he wanted mothers to teach their sons to sew too. When I got home from school, Julian again asked me if he could do some stitching and this time I said "Yes, absolutely you can - I'll get some stuff ready now".
He was a little shocked - his response was "really???!!!???"
He decided that it would be fun to make fruit and I decided it was probably best to use felt, embroidery floss and a nice big needle. Julian chose the fruit and the colours and did the stitching. He had so much fun and did a good job too.

His little brother, Louis, also had a bit of a go, but to be honest, I think he's a little too small for this kind of thing. So here's Julian with his bowl of fruit. Next we are making Christmas decorations and then we might just have to make a bag........well, the list is endless!

Thanks Mixtape!

cheers

great job julian! im so happy for him that he now knows how to sew:) i know what you mean about the steriotypes that we try to ignore but are still in the back of our minds, today it felt a little strange to put a fairy skirt on a little boy, but it made me feel good when i saw him enjoying it.he had lots of fun twirling and dancing in it, and then he went back to his trucks and trains.LOVE your quilt! id so love to have a quilt like that but i cant seem to motivate myself to try a complicated pattern. but maybe after sein how great yours looks...:)

MY son is quite the sewer. Maybe this inspires Julian. If he can do this adorable fruit, he can make his own stuffy too! http://mijkimproves.blogspot.com/2007/05/i-homeschooled-today.html

hey that looks like a bit of fun! good for him - and you that this project happened.
I'm sure it's a very good activity to develop fine motor skills.
Could come in handy for a future surgeon :)?

yay for the powers of needle and felt!

i hear there have also been t-shirts adorned with the stuff..?

i feel so out of the loop sometimes, but then i realise that's what blogs like yours and Karen's are all about - connecting people from everywhere through a single blog/topic/goal.

so thank you for giving this to me!

The fruit looks great. It's great that he is learning to sew, a very useful thing to know. My husband uses my machine when he wants to take something in or put a hem up, he just needs me to thread the needle for him (he can't see it very well)
take care
Pip

That is so great! Look how proud he is! Excellent! Kellie wants to learn how to sew too. She wants to make a pillow and some other things. I bought her a sewing machine for Christmas with a sewing basket and all the stuff to go in it and some fabric. She will be so excited! She is definitely my crafty one.

Nice job Julian! My boys all sew. My 19 year old only sews these days when he wants to impress a girl. (Girls love softies made by boys!) So this may be a skill that will be useful in the future!!!

What a great job Julian did with his bowl of fruit..............boys do enjoy working with their hands too! Surfer Boy loved machine work before he went to school, it just fascinated him how the sewing machine worked. Keep on culturing your boys textile creativity. Boys love knitting also.

I shall steal your idea of fruit if that is ok. I am starting a craft club at our little primary school this week.

I'm blog-hopping my way through Chookyblue's SSCS list to see who else is playing.
